Senior Designer (curtain wall)

POSITION SUMMARY:   

 

The primary responsibility of the Senior Designer will be:

  • Contribute as a single point of contact for the leadership of the base development and design of major contract façade systems.

 

This is achieved by:

  • Organic design establishment
  • Creations of base systems schematics.
  • Establishing system chassis.
  • Coordinates with structural and thermal developments to continuously evolve performance.
  • Provides leadership and commentary for alternative solutions to project management department.
  • Leads prototype testing to system approval.
  • Liaisons with entire engineering department for the fulfillment of development, shop drawings and fabrication drawings until full completion of the project.
  • Develop and implement a plan to validate that product design meets or exceeds contract performance requirements.

 

The Senior Designer must act as a central liaison between:

  • Client (Contractor/Owner plus Project Consultant, Architect).
  • Company

 

 

He/She is required to coordinate the activities of:

  • Engineering
  • Manufacturing best practices.
  • Installation /Safety best practices.
  • All Departments with respect to the Contract Documents and Project schedule.

 

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Senior Designer must work with the following parties to accomplish the objectives listed below:

 

Client/Project Manager.

  • Liaise with Architects, Consultants, Builders and Owners on all aspects of the project as required; and in conjunction with Project Management.
  • Review and support the contract terms and conditions to include tender documents together with the Estimating Manager.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with all the contract documents (contracts, drawings and specifications).
  • Support design changes as required by Client and Project Managers.
  • Attend design assist and project meetings as required.
  • Create high level engineering deliverable schedule to form basis of contract and project start-up.

 

Engineering

  • Work with Job Captain to set up shop drawings, release schedules and fabrication drawings.
  • Work with Developers and Designers on project detailing with an aim towards incorporating function, product integrity, economy and ease of installation.
  • Lend experience to Engineers and Modelers to streamline structural and thermal solutions.
  • Ensure shop drawings encompass correct scope and specified materials.
  • Expedite R.F.I.’s from Client to keep engineering process moving.
  • Coordinate; streamline timing and functions of mock-ups and testing through design, research and development.

 

Sales/Estimating

  • Develop proposal drawings at tender phase of project with substance to create high level pricing by Estimators.
  • Liaison with estimating to develop best practices for accurate value engineering, RFI’s, and change orders.
  • Assist Sales and Estimating through organic design and design assist efforts.

 

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Cont.:

 

Manufacturing/Production Planning

  • Liaison best practices to design for Manufacturing.
  • Be familiar with the Manufacturing and equipment limitations.
  • Continuous communication with Manufacturing to update abilities and design limitations.

 

Field Operations

  • Establish design which interacts with best practices for site limitations and installations.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education:

  • Degree or Diploma in Project Management, Building Science, Architecture or Engineering.
  • Proficient in MS Office and MS Project.
  • Autocadd
  • Inventor
  • Revit

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years in construction design management.
  • Minimum 15 years in curtainwall design or façade design.
  • Minimum 5 years of organic creative façade design.
  • Minimum 10 years of design software (CADD, Inventor and Revit).
  • Minimum 10 years of North American or equivalent building code interpretation.
  • Minimum 5 years of drafting technology.

 

 

SKILLS AND BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE:

The Senior Designer must be a self starter with the following skills and experience:

  • Excellent communication and motivational skills.
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills.
  • The ability to readily delegate the required tasks.
  • Direct experience in coordinating and managing design of custom curtain wall projects will be an asset. (30M + CAD)
  • Experienced in dealing with contractors, owners, developers and suppliers on all aspects of project management.
  • Sales and estimating experience is an asset.
  • Anticipate and avoid problem areas/issues from past experience and ability to foresee beyond the current status of same.
